International Day for Women in Maritime, 18th May 2023, Interview 2

Continuing our series of interviews on the occasion of the upcoming International Day for Women in Maritime day, 18 May, we spoke with Valerie Ramirez, former Cadet at the Oceanic Hospitality Training Centre and now working onboard Silversea cruises as a Galley Utility. Valerie is presently cross-training onboard to become assistant pastry chef.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to work at sea?

I am a former hotel receptionist, working for 3 years in Manila, and my work background gave me the opportunity to pursue my dreams to work onboard a cruise vessel. This is my dream job and with the will of God and help from the Oceanic Hospitality Training Centre I was able to achieve it. I am onboard now enjoying my job as well as travelling around the world.

What do you love about your job, and how do you find it working with different nationalities?

I love everything about my job. If you really love and enjoy your job every difficult thing becomes easier. We all know that there is no easy job, you have to work hard while working with other nationalities. Patience, understanding, and support should always be kept in our mind.

Tell us a memorable moment from your time at sea?

The first time that I experienced the “Rough sea” I felt dizzy while still on duty, but I had to endure it because no one else could cover my shift.

What is your favourite recipe?

Grilled lobster tail with garlic butter.

Have you ever felt that being a female crew obstructed you from employment?

No, because I believe in myself and personality, and I have the confidence, work background and knowledge to succeed.

How do you see the future for female seafarers?

I think there is a bright future for female seafarers, because what female can do is limitless. We can keep up with all the tasks needed to accomplish here onboard. We are hardworking and passionate.

What advice can you give to other females who wish to join a career at sea?

If I can do it, you can do it. Just believe in yourself and have the courage to pursue your dreams.
